Apex Up CIC Positive Behaviour Management Policy
1 Policy statement
Apex Up CIC is committed to creating a safe, respectful and positive environment where children and young people can take part, enjoy themselves and do their best. We promote good behaviour through clear expectations, strong relationships and positive role-modelling, and we never use physical punishment, humiliation or harsh discipline.
2 Purpose and scope
This policy explains how we encourage positive behaviour and respond to behaviour that is challenging. It applies to all staff, coaches and volunteers in all our activities.
3 Our approach
We set simple, clear ground rules with young people and explain why they matter. We focus on the positive — noticing and praising good behaviour, effort and respect, and using the discipline and self-control that come naturally through martial arts and sport in a positive way. Strong, trusting relationships between coaches and young people are the foundation of good behaviour, and many of the young people we work with respond best to consistency, fairness and being listened to.
4 Managing challenging behaviour
When behaviour is challenging, staff stay calm, de-escalate, and respond fairly and consistently. We try to understand what is behind the behaviour, recognising that some young people have experienced difficult or traumatic circumstances. We work with parents and carers where helpful, and we give young people the chance to put things right rather than simply punishing them.
5 Physical intervention
Physical intervention is only ever used as a last resort, to prevent a young person from harming themselves or others, and must be reasonable, proportionate and the minimum necessary. Any use of physical intervention is recorded and reported to the Director, and parents are informed. This is separate from the normal, consented physical contact involved in coaching, which is covered in our Code of Conduct.
6 Asking a young person to leave a session
Removing a young person from a session, or from the programme, is a last resort used only when their behaviour puts themselves or others at risk and other approaches have not worked. We do this with care, involve parents, and try to keep the door open for the young person to return with support.
7 Links and review
This policy links to our Safeguarding, Anti-Bullying & Harassment and Code of Conduct policies. Where behaviour raises a safeguarding concern, we follow our Safeguarding Policy. This policy is reviewed at least annually.
