Apex Up CIC Lone Working Policy

1 Policy statement

Apex Up CIC is committed to keeping staff and volunteers safe, and to protecting the children  and young people we work with. We aim to avoid lone working wherever we can, and where  it cannot be avoided, we put sensible precautions in place.

2 Purpose and scope

This policy explains how we manage the risks of working alone. It applies to anyone who, in  the course of their work for us, may be on their own — for example opening or closing the  venue, or being the only adult present at any point.

3 Our approach

For safeguarding reasons, we avoid situations where a member of staff or a volunteer is alone  with a child. We plan sessions so that at least two adults are present wherever possible, and  we keep activities within sight or hearing of others. This protects both children and the adults  working with them.

4 Managing the risks of working alone

Where lone working cannot be avoided, we assess the risks and put controls in place, which  may include: agreeing check-in and check-out arrangements; making sure someone knows  where the lone worker is and when they are expected to finish; carrying a charged phone; and  avoiding tasks that are not safe to do alone. Staff and volunteers should never feel they have  to put themselves at risk, and can stop an activity if they feel unsafe.

5 Opening and closing the venue

When opening or locking up alone, staff should be aware of their surroundings, keep the  building secure, and report any concerns about the premises or security to the Director.

6 Responsibilities and review

The Director makes sure lone-working risks are assessed and that staff and volunteers  understand this policy. Everyone is responsible for following the agreed arrangements and  reporting concerns. This policy links to our Health & Safety, Risk Management & Assessment  and Safeguarding policies and is reviewed at least annually.
